Firewall settings for popular Instant Messaging clients

 


I have decided to start collecting the various firewall configuration settings of popular Instant Messaging clients and post them here for easy reference. 

If you have any firewall settings you would like to contribute, it would be most appreciated.  Please be sure to include DETAILED, step by step instructions using the postings below as an example.

BlackICE PC Protection 3.5 and above
Instructions on setting up ICQ to work with BlackICE:

1. Open the ICQ Menu and select Preferences.
2. Select the Connection feature.
3. Click on the User tab.
4. By default the Use sever proxy settings (recommended) is set. Click on the radio button Not using a proxy. Incoming ports are needed only for communication with users that are behind a firewall.
5. Use dynamically allocated port numbers is selected by default. Click on
radio button Use the following TCP listen port for incoming event.
6. Insert the port numbers From to To for the port to set your port range. Use
port numbers FROM 8000 TO 8012

7. Save the settings and exit the preferences.

Next, go into the BlackICE Advanced Firewall Settings from the BlackICE Tools menu:

A dialog box will be displayed with the current advanced settings.
1. Click on the ADD button to add a new entry to the list. A new entry form
will be displayed.
2. Name the new entry "ICQ Listening Ports"
3. Turn ON the "All Addresses" checkbox
4. In the Port entry field, put in "8000 - 8012" (no quotes)
5. The TYPE field should be set to TCP.
6. Select the ACCEPT option in the mode control group.
7. Select the period of time you would like to have these options available.
Usually this would be set to FOREVER.
8. Click the OK button.

Next you will need to create a new entry that will allow you to connect with
the ICQ server.
1. Click the ADD button.
2. Name the new entry "ICQ Server Login"
3. Turn ON the "All Addresses" checkbox.
4. In the Port entry field put in "5190" (no quotes)
5. The TYPE field should be set to TCP.
6. Select the ACCEPT option in the mode control group.
7. Select the period of time you would like to have these options available.
Usually this would be set to FOREVER.
8. Click the OK button. The list of settings will be re-displayed.
9. Click the OK button to exit the list window.

Save the settings and you should now be able to connect to ICQ and connect to other ICQ users to transfer files while in the Paranoid protection setting in BlackICE.

Instructions for setting up Yahoo Messenger 5.5 to work with BlackICE PC Protection 3.5 and above:

Go into the BlackICE Advanced Firewall Settings from the BlackICE Tools
menu:  A dialog box will be displayed with the current advanced settings.

1. Click on the ADD button to add a new entry to the list. A new entry form
will be displayed.
2. Name the new entry "Yahoo Messenger"
3. Turn ON the "All Addresses" checkbox
4. In the Port entry field, put in "5050" (no quotes)
5. The TYPE field should be set to TCP.
6. Select the ACCEPT option in the mode control group.
7. Select the period of time you would like to have these options available.
Usually this would be set to FOREVER.
8. Click the OK button. The list of settings will be re-displayed.
9. Click the OK button to exit the list window.

You should now be able to connect with Yahoo Messenger users and transfer files with the BlackICE protection setting on Paranoid.
